The December issue of the ECHA Newsletter is the first one in a new online format. We have responded to your feedback and, by using an online format, we are making the Newsletter more interactive and modern. You will also find it easier to share articles of interest with your colleagues - individual stories can now be sent as a simple link. The online newsletter also comes with a useful 'Search' function. Have a look and let us know what you think.

Candidate List for authorisation updated with fifty-four new substances of very high concern (SVHCs)

19 December 2012

With the addition of 54 new SVHCs to the Candidate List, it now contains a total of 138 substances and the target set by Vice-President Tajani and Commissioner Potočnik to have 136 SVHCs on the Candidate List by the end of 2012 has been reached.

New public consultations on CLH proposals for three pesticides and two industrial chemicals

18 December 2012

ECHA is seeking comments on new proposals for harmonised classification and labelling (CLH) for three pesticides: Pyridaben, Dodemorph and Dodemorph acetate, and two industrial chemicals: Imidazole and Phenol, dodecyl-, branched. The public consultations will be open for 45 days and will end on 1 February 2013.

The Member State Committee identifies the first respiratory sensitisers as SVHCs

17 December 2012

The MSC unanimously agreed on the identification of 23 SVHCs. These will be added to the Candidate List by ECHA decision together with another 31 substances which did not require MSC involvement. The Committee also indicated their agreement on ECHA's draft recommendation for adding 10 new substances to the Authorisation List.

ECHA launches a public consultation on SEAC's draft opinion on restricting chromium (VI) in leather articles

Before the adoption of SEAC's final opinion, the Agency is seeking public comments on the Committee draft opinion. The public consultation period will end on 12 February 2013.

RAC adopts seventeen scientific opinions

Corrigenda: 14 December 2012

The Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) has adopted 15 opinions for harmonised classification and labelling (CLH), one opinion at the Executive Director's request concerning the safety of a plant protection product (Article 77(3)) and an opinion on the restriction proposal of Chromium VI in leather compounds.

REACH-IT and ECHA Helpdesk will be closed during Christmas and the New Year

ECHA would like to remind the industry that REACH-IT will be closed from 21 December 2012 12:00 until 2 January 2013 at 10:00 (EET). The ECHA Helpdesk will limit its services from 19 December 2012 at 12:00 (EET) in order to be able to process all the questions that will arrive before the Christmas break.

ECHA-term user survey results now published

ECHA has published its first ECHA-term user survey report. The results show that ECHA-term indeed supports the work of its users in 22 EU languages: 67% of them agreed with the statement that the database makes their work more efficient and it is easy to use. The feedback received will be taken into account in further developments of the database. The report is now available.

Upcoming seminars for future applicants for authorisation

On 11 and 12 February 2013, ECHA will host a seminar on applications for authorisation specifically designed for future applicants. The aim is to raise the overall understanding of the authorisation application procedure via presentations, discussions and feedback from the industry. Due to space constraints, participants will be selected through an application process which will open on 10 December 2012. Priority will be given to future applicants not having had a chance to participate in the seminar held on 1 and 2 October 2012. A similar seminar is also planned to take place sometime during June 2013. The registration is now open until 11 January 2013.
